A selection of NOS and new 86 BCD chainrings for a single, double, compact double or triple chainset set-up. These 86 BCD cranks were produced by Sakae Ringyo (SR) and Stronglight through the 1980s and 1990s and are among the most versatile road and touring crank sets available. With the same compact BCD (bolt circle diameter) for a range of chainrings between 28 tooth and 53 tooth (and higher!) these chainsets were specified as doubles on some bikes and triples on others, the only difference being the chainring bolts and BB length needed.
With the new interest in compact and ultra compact doubles on road bikes we feel these cranks definitely have a place today. You can easily set up a chainset with a 28/40 combo for a really useable set of gears on a fairly narrow range road cassette without the need to change to a long cage rear mech. Further, it is possible to change an existing double crank set to a compact triple set up of say 28/38/48 for a touring or long distance bike with added chainring bolts and spacers.
The 86 BCD chainrings are available from a range of manufacturers, some sourced new from Gebhardt and Stronglight (46t and 48t) and others NOS such as the SR rings and the 51 tooth Stronglight. All rings are 3/32″ width and RE compatible with 5, 6, 7 and 8 speed drivetrains without any fuss, others have used them successfully with 9 speed drivetrains too.
