The Dia Compe SS-5 brake lever was the value for money upgrade lever of choice back in the early 90s, with Japanese quality and low weight. The minimal two finger design is very pleasing to use and works well with all types of flat bar shifters. Pull is optimised for cantilever brakes but I have used these extensively on hybrids and converted road bikes with caliper brakes effectively too.
